About the Program

What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?  Desensitizer, Caries Arrest, Stains, Doesn’t Stain

In 2016, Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) received the Breakthrough Therapy Designation by FDA because of the ability to arrest decay. This is the first oral health therapy to receive this designation. In 2018, James Nickman, then-president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, said that, aside from fluoridated water “silver diamine fluoride may be the single greatest innovation in pediatric dental health in the last century. Silver diamine fluoride was paramount in emergency dental care at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. But what is it really? What is the mechanism of action behind SDF? Can it really provide dentinal hypersensitivity relief for up to two years? Can SDF be used with minimal staining? This course will explore the answers to these questions using the most current evidence-based information along with the added benefits of SDF in the armamentarium of dental hygienists. A discussion on informed consent, coding, and billing of SDF will be had.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the history of silver diamine fluoride
  • Examine the science and clinical use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) for dentinal desensitization and caries arrest
  • Utilize silver diamine fluoride for preventative treatment, minimally invasive dentistry and dentinal hypersensitivity
  • Establish office protocol for silver diamine fluoride therapy and determine patient populations that could benefit from treatment

Bio

Dr. Joy D. Void-Holmes, RDH, BSDH, MHSc, AADH is the founder of Dr. Joy, RDH and the creator of the Dental Hygiene Student Planner.

Dr. Joy’s career began with trips to the dentist office as a little girl in her native Washington, D.C. Unlike most children, Dr. Joy looked forward to every trip to the dentist; she loved that her dentist looked like her. It allowed her to envision a future with a job she loved that also helped others put their best smile forward.

Her dental visits would eventually turn into a position as a front desk receptionist at the very office she grew up visiting at the age of 16 years. She learned the ins and outs of the industry and quickly realized that her original major in college, accounting, would not support her mission to help others in the ways a career as an oral health professional could. With the encouragement of her favorite dentist and mentor, she switched her focus and never looked back.

She is the co-founder of JELL-EdTM, an educational consulting company designed to bridge the gap between instruction and the instructor.

Dr. Joy is a professional speaker and published author. She has presented continuing education courses nationally and internationally in the areas of instrumentation, ultrasonics, infection control, nutrition and biochemistry, and dentinal hypersensitivity, along with her signature keynotes, Confidence and Courage and Diversity of Culture, Diversity of Thought, Diversity of Action.
